In industrial manufacturing, component failure due to wear, fatigue, or impact loading is a costly and recurring challenge. Gears wear prematurely, shafts fail under cyclic stress, and critical components lose dimensional accuracy over time. One of the most proven solutions to these issues is Carburising Hardening & Tempering—a precision heat treatment process designed to deliver a hard, wear-resistant surface combined with a tough, shock-absorbing core.
At Infinity Thermotech Solutions Private Limited, we provide advanced carburising hardening & tempering services as part of our comprehensive metallurgical services portfolio. Our controlled processes help manufacturers extend component life, improve reliability, and meet demanding industry specifications.
At Infinity Thermotech, we focus on metallurgical precision and repeatable results. Our carburising hardening & tempering services are defined by:
This level of control ensures industry-specific specifications, consistent quality, and predictable performance for every batch.
Carburising is a case hardening process in which low-carbon steel components are heated in a carbon-rich atmosphere at high temperatures. During this stage, carbon atoms diffuse into the surface layer of the steel, creating a high-carbon “case” while the core remains low in carbon. This approach enables manufacturers to achieve surface hardening without sacrificing internal toughness.
Immediately after carburising, components undergo hardening through quenching. Rapid cooling—typically using oil or polymer quenchants—transforms the carbon-enriched surface into hard martensite, delivering exceptional wear resistance. The lower-carbon core cools differently, remaining tough and ductile, which is critical for absorbing shock loads in demanding applications such as gear heat treatment.
While hardening creates extreme hardness, it also introduces brittleness and internal stresses. Tempering steel is therefore a crucial final step. By reheating the component to a controlled lower temperature, we relieve stresses, reduce brittleness, and fine-tune mechanical properties. The result is the optimal balance of surface hardness, fatigue strength, and core toughness.
Carburising hardening & tempering is widely used for components subjected to continuous wear and cyclic loading, including:
Gears, shafts, camshafts, bushings, pins, sprockets, and hydraulic components.
In addition to carburising hardening & tempering, Infinity Thermotech offers a complete suite of precision heat treatment solutions. For components requiring maximum through-hardness, explore our Precision Induction Hardening services for localized heat treatment. To achieve superior corrosion resistance and low distortion, our Nitriding & Ferritic Nitrocarburising (FNC) processes provide an excellent alternative. Carburising creates a hard surface case with a tough core, while through-hardening hardens the entire cross-section. Through-hardening methods include processes like precision induction hardening.
Low-carbon and alloy steels such as AISI 1018, 8620, and 9310 are ideal. We also provide material selection and metallurgical consultation.
Typical case depths range from 0.020” to 0.120” (0.5 mm to 3.0 mm), depending on material, cycle time, and performance requirements.
Some dimensional change is inherent, but our controlled atmospheres, fixturing methods, and optimized quenching processes minimize distortion, reducing post-machining costs.
Tempering reduces brittleness and internal stresses caused by quenching, improving toughness and preventing premature failure.
